CaddyTrek R4 Review: Hands-Free Follow Me Golf Cart Tested on the Course

Can an electric golf push cart follow you without a wearable remote and respond to hand gestures? I took the CaddyTrek R4 to Sawmill Golf Club to find out.

A Golf Cart That Actually Responds to Hand Signals?

I’ve spent a lot of time testing electric golf push carts for Michigan Golf Live, and it’s fascinating to watch how quickly the technology is advancing.

Not long ago, the biggest innovation was simply having a motorized cart that eliminated the need to push or pull your clubs around the golf course.

Then came remote controls. Then Follow Me technology.

Now we’re entering another fascinating chapter, and the CaddyTrek R4 electric golf push cart offers a glimpse of what that future might look like.

Imagine walking down the fairway with your clubs following behind you, without carrying a remote control. Or imagine sending your cart ahead of you and using hand gestures to tell it where to go.

That’s exactly what the CaddyTrek R4 is designed to do.

Naturally, I wanted to find out whether these features actually work.

So after unboxing the R4 in our studio, I headed to Sawmill Golf Club in Freeland, Michigan to put its technology to the test.

And what I discovered was pretty impressive.

First Impressions: Packaging, Accessories and Setup

One of the first things I examine when reviewing golf technology is how the product arrives.

The CaddyTrek R4 immediately earned points for its secure packaging. When you’re investing in sophisticated equipment, it’s reassuring to see that the manufacturer has taken care to protect it during shipping.

Inside the package, I found an assortment of accessories, including a golf ball holder, tee holder, towel, umbrella attachment and a place to hang a golf glove so it can dry.

There’s also a remote control, battery and charger, along with the option to use a smartphone app.

But one of the most important items in the package isn’t particularly exciting – it’s the instruction manual.

And yes, I know. Many of us would rather start pushing buttons than spend time reading directions.

With the R4, that’s a mistake. CaddyTrek provides helpful instructional materials, including QR codes linking to tutorial videos. I strongly recommend scanning those codes and following the setup sequence the first time.

The physical assembly itself is straightforward.

You’ll unfold the wheel assembly, secure the handle, position the rear stabilizing wheel, install the battery and attach your golf bag.

The rear stabilizing wheel is particularly interesting because it’s designed to help prevent the cart from tipping backward on an incline.

My advice? Take a few minutes to learn the setup process properly. The R4 isn’t unusually difficult to assemble, but understanding its features makes the experience much more enjoyable and you’ll only need to learn it once.

Remote Control: The Familiar Way to Operate the R4

Before exploring the more advanced technology, I started with conventional remote-control operation.

The R4’s remote lets you move forward, backward, left and right, while adjusting speed.

It performed the basic functions I expected from a quality remote-controlled electric push cart.

For golfers who simply want to send their clubs down the fairway without pushing them, this mode provides that familiar convenience.

But buying the R4 exclusively for its remote control would mean overlooking the technology that makes this particular cart so interesting.

Because the real excitement begins when you put the remote aside.

Follow Me Technology Without Wearing a Remote

This is one of my favorite features of the CaddyTrek R4.

Many autonomous electric golf carts rely on a remote or tracking device attached to the golfer, but the R4 takes a different approach.

Its camera-based system allows the cart to recognize and follow you without requiring a remote on your belt or elsewhere on your body.

I activated Follow Me mode and started walking. The cart followed.

When I changed direction, it adjusted. When I stopped, it stopped. When I started moving again, it resumed following.

That’s the kind of convenience that can make walking a golf course more enjoyable.

And during much of my testing, the system worked very well.

There is one important operational detail: when you’re ready to select a club and hit your shot, you should pause the Follow Me function rather than simply assuming the cart will remain inactive.

There’s also one limitation I discovered that deserves attention.

While filming, my production assistant Ken was standing near me. On several attempts, the cart selected him as the person to follow instead of me.

It happened repeatedly when we were close together.

That doesn’t mean the system is fundamentally unreliable. But it does demonstrate that a camera-based tracking system can become confused when multiple people are nearby.

My recommendation is to make sure the cart has clearly identified you before walking away.

March Ahead: A Golf Cart That Responds to Hand Gestures

Now we get to the feature that really separates the CaddyTrek R4 from many other electric golf push carts – March Ahead mode.

Instead of following behind you, the cart travels in front and rather than relying entirely on a handheld remote, you can influence its direction and distance through your body position and hand gestures.

During my demonstration, I could move to one side and watch the cart adjust its path.

I also demonstrated how arm positions can signal turns and changes in the distance between the golfer and the cart.

It’s remarkable technology.

Think about the possibilities. You’re walking down the fairway, your clubs are traveling ahead of you, and you’re communicating with the cart almost like a third-base coach directing a runner!

But I also encountered a moment when the technology didn’t respond exactly as expected.

Personally, while I appreciate the cleverness of March Ahead mode, I expect to use Follow Me more frequently because I generally prefer having my clubs travel behind me. But golfers who like keeping their equipment in front of them may feel differently.

Stability, Golf Bag Position and Practical Details

The R4 includes a rear stabilizing wheel, which is an important design feature when navigating inclines.

The handle is adjustable, which is helpful for accommodating different preferences. But because the camera is positioned beneath the handle area, you need to avoid adjusting the handle into a position that obstructs the camera. That’s a small detail, but an important one.

As with any electric golf push cart, becoming familiar with its controls and configuration before heading onto a challenging course is time well spent.

How Does the CaddyTrek R4 Compare With Other Electric Golf Carts?

There are three comparisons I think golfers should consider.

First, compared with conventional remote-controlled carts, the R4 offers a more hands-free experience through its camera-based Follow Me technology.

Second, compared with Follow Me carts that require a wearable remote, the R4 provides the convenience of camera tracking without keeping a remote attached to your body.

Third, compared with carts that only travel behind the golfer, the R4’s March Ahead feature offers another way to manage your equipment while walking.

Those distinctions don’t automatically make the R4 the right choice for everyone.

They do, however, make it one of the more interesting electric push carts I’ve tested.

My Final Verdict: Is the CaddyTrek R4 Worth Considering?

After spending time with the R4, I came away impressed.

The camera-based Follow Me technology worked well in most of my demonstrations. March Ahead is genuinely innovative, and the overall package includes thoughtful accessories and useful instructional resources.

For golfers who love walking and appreciate the latest innovations, the CaddyTrek R4 deserves a serious look.
