For most amateur golfers, long irons are one of the hardest clubs in the bag to hit consistently.
In this Get Better At Golf lesson, PGA Professional Kyle Martin explains why hybrids are often the smarter choice.
1. Hybrids Launch Higher
Modern golf balls spin less, which makes launching long irons difficult.
Hybrids:
- Have lower centers of gravity
- Produce higher launch
- Land softer on greens
This is especially helpful on long par threes.
2. Hybrids Are More Forgiving
Compared to a thin 4 iron:
- Hybrids have larger clubheads
- Weight is distributed for stability
- Mishits travel farther and straighter
They’re also more effective from the rough.
3. Play Hybrids Like Irons
Common mistake: swinging hybrids like fairway woods.
Instead:
- Position the ball just left of center
- Make a descending strike
- Expect a small divot
Compression improves control.
4. Get Properly Fit
Beyond the 4 iron replacement, fitting matters.
Consider:
- 5 hybrid vs 5 iron
- 7 wood options
- Shaft and loft adjustments
Proper fitting maximizes performance.
